The rise of religious fundamentalism in the Middle East mostly had a negative impact on regional security from 1970 to 2000. There were many reasons for the rise and it was mainly due to the Islamic fundamentalism as they were described as a turning point. Regional security refers to the security concerns and well being of the regional states in the Middle East. Religious fundamentalism was initially caused by the desire to recreate the golden age of the religion and improving the present, yet they were also unwilling to compromise with reality. Religious fundamental groups became more popular as they were able to convince the people that the mainstream groups were unable to do a good job in various areas thus leading to a rise in†¦show more content†¦Another example is that the rise of Hizbollah created instability in North Israel that led to Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and occupation since 1985. Israeli invasion destroyed PLO HQ and forced it to move to Tunis, it also reduced the influence of Iran and Syria. Violence was a feature of fundamentalism as well. It was deeply connected to the 1990s and the changing world order. However, religious fundamentalism was only one of the causes. It did not create the Arab-Israeli or Kashmir conflict. It only radicalised it and made it more difficult to solve. Such conflicts were a product of non-religious factors such as nationalist claims over lands, response to threats, strategic, political and socio-economic reasons. Such conflicts were already present before the rise of religious fundamentalism. They were actually nationalists using religion as a justification for their actions to gain support. Similarly, religious fundamentalism was only one of the reasons for protracted peace. The regional instability caused by Islamic fundamentalism was also due to other factors. The Shah of Iran was overthrown by left wing groups and weaknesses of secular groups. The Iran-Iraq war was also due to conflicts over the waterway. The role of the religious fundamentalism should not be overstated.
